He graduated from Yale University in 1769, and married Bethiah Harding Brown, daughter of Samuel Brown and Martha (Harding) Brown, of Eastham, in 1772. She was born at Eastham, Barnstable County, Mass., Jan. 12, 1746. Simeon enlisted in the Continental Army, became a First Lieutenant in the New York regiment, and later served as surgeon at West Point, N.Y., where he contracted smallpox in an epidemic, and died thereof in the spring of 1778. After the death of Simeon, the third child was born, and when the British burned their house in New Fairfield, Bethiah moved with her three children, in the middle of a cold winter, to Gorham, Maine, where lived her brothers Samuel and Sylvanus and her sister, Martha A. Harding. Still later, after the death of her son James, she moved further north to Pownal, Maine, where she died on Mar. 9, 1838, at the age of 94 years. The three children were:
Jane 5.132a,
James B. 5.132b,
Simeon II 5.132c.

Bethiah Harding Brown was a young woman in her early twenties when she went to Connecticut from her home in Cape Cod to visit and uncle. There she met and married Simeon Tryon. Simeon was the youngest son of James Tryon 3.6a and Jane (Wright) Tryon, of New Fairfield. He had received his degree of Bachelor of Arts from Yale College in 1769, his M.A. in '72. He is said to have studied divinity with the Rev. Elijah Sill, of New Fairfield, and to have studied medicine and to have practiced it. Bethiah and Simeon were married in 1772, and went to live in Fredericksburgh, Dutchess County, N. Y., just over the line from New Fairfield. Here in '74, their first child, Jane, was born. The part of Dutchess County in which the town of Fredericksburgh was situated, later became Putnam County. West Point was about 25 miles away.

Simeon Tryon 4.38d, as a member of the Fredericksburgh Committee of Safety, and as a signer of the association, took part in the organization of Dutchess County militia, helping supervise the election of officers in Beat No. 3 for Fredericksburgh Precinct, Sept. 20, 1775. He afterward entered the Continental service. On Feb. 19, 1776, Simeon received warrant as first lieutenant in Abraham Swartout's (sixth) company, Col. James Clinton's (second) regiment, New York Continental troops. On May 22, 1776, Lieut. Simeon Tryon was stationed at Fort Montgomery in the Highlands with Capt. Swartout and other officers of Col. Clinton's regiment. Lieut. Simeon was recommended to the Committee of Arrangements, N. Y. Provincial Congress by Brig. Gen. James Clinton as a good officer, November, 1776. On Nov. 21, 1776, Simeon was named in N. Y. Provincial Congress arrangement of N. Y. Continental Officers, as First Lieutenant in Capt. Jacobus Rosencrans' company, Henry B. Livingston's (fourth) regiment.

According to tradition, in the spring of '78, Simeon, while on medical duty at West Point, died there of smallpox. Bethiah, with her two small children, was allowed to see him through a window when he was sick.

Bethiah, when she became a widow, returned to New Fairfield, where Simeon II was born in September of that year. She now longed to be with her other relatives, and, in the snows of the following winter, her brother, Samuel Brown, took her and the three children to Gorham, Maine, where numerous relatives had come from Cape Cod to settle. In a chest Bethiah carried a few cherished possessions, among them Simeon's two degrees, his coat, and sword. Two buttons have survived the coat. The family records show that in about 1900, the coat was described by a son of Simeon II, Joseph 6.167a, born 1832:

"When I was around 18 years of age and weighed about 135 and stood 5 ft. 8, I had the exclusive honor of wearing his (Simeon's) military brown home-spun swallow-tail coat which just fitted. The impression enclosed of the buttons is correct. The covering plate bearing the impression was a German silver. No private in the Continental army ever saw his way inside of that style of coat. There was an old sword, a small square at the hilt and tapering its full length to a point, which was throwing about the wood-house for years. I always thought it had been the officer's."

And Winfield 6.167g, born 1839, recorded: "I recall very well seeing the silver knee-buckles and shoe-buckles belonging to Grandfather Tryon. I was probably about 10 years old. Besides two buttons from the coat, I have one or two sleeve or cuff buttons."
