He lived at Elliott's Crossroads from 1846 to 1860. He enlisted in Company I, First Ohio Heavy Artillery as a private, and served in this Company from July 6, 1863 to July 25, 1865. After his discharge from the Army, he hunted buffalo with William F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody, and scouted for Gen. George A. Custer. He was intimately acquainted with Kit Carson and "Wild Bill" Hitchcock. He at one time owned and operated a sawmill in the present State of Washington. He was at Winfield, Kans., in 1870, and met and married first, Clarissa Amelia (Lloyd), a young widow, in Cloud County, Kans. on Feb. 9, 1873. She was a daughter of George and Hannah (---) Lloyd, was born in Racine County, Wis., Sept. 4, 1846, and ran away from home with her father's hired hand, a Mr. Green, and married him. He was a Civil War veteran, and later died in the Veteran's Hospital at Leavenworth, Kans. William and Clarissa moved to Colorado, then to Missouri, Back to Kansas, and finally settled in St. Louis, Mo., where he became a policeman. They later ran a dairy. He left her on Mar. 25, 1890, taking with him their son Custer, not yet 10 years old. She divorced him on June 5, 1891, and subsequently married a Mr. Williams in 1893, this venture also ending in divorce 7-1/2 years later. There were no children by this marriage. William L. moved on to Econtuchka in the Seminole Nation, then to Servado in the Territory of Oklahoma, where he broke the virgin soil with a specially-built 20-inch breaking plow, pulled by a team of 3 yoke of oxen. Later he conducted a freighting business with the help of his young son Custer. Servado was located on the county line of Oklahoma and Logan Counties, due north of the present town of Luther, and 29 miles southeast of Guthrie, the then Territorial Capital. In Guthrie he met and married second, Malinda Ann or Annie Scott, a young widow 30 years his junior, on Sept. 11, 1894. She was the daughter of John Arnett Scott and Emily Caroline (Lamar) Scott, and was born in Barton County, Mo., Mar. 12, 1875. She had been married at a tender age to Samuel Shoemaker, had one son Johnnie, who died an infant, was divorced and had her maiden name restored. William L. and Malinda Ann settled at Ingram, now Wellston, Okla., where he hauled freight until his son Custer left home in 1897. About this time his health began to fail, and he died at Wellston on Aug. 25, 1906, at the age of 61 years. He was 59 years old when his youngest son was born. This second family consisted of five boys:
Wesley Merritt 9.100f,

Dewey McKinley 9.100h,
William Lawton 9.100i,
Fairbanks 9.100j.

The July 28, 1905 issue of the Wellston News had this to report on the Tryon family: An Unusual Family. --Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Tryon of this place certainly take the cake when it comes to naming a family. This is the rather unusual list: Wesley Merritt Tryon, Abraham Lincoln Tryon, Dewey McKinley Tryon, William McKinley Lawton Roosevelt Tryon, and George Washington Fairbanks Tryon. Besides taking the prize for names, they do not believe in race suicide, as the oldest boy is not yet 11 years old while the youngest is past 15 months, and all bid fair to make anew the history of their country. Malinda Ann or Annie, left a widow at 31 years of age, with five young sons, raised her boys, under one roof. Subsequently she married third Stephen L. Crenshaw, Dee. 28, 1908. He was born in 1858, and they were divorced on May 4, 1911. No children. Then on Dee. 28, 1912, she married fourth, Harry B. Humphrey. He was born in 1870, and they were divorced Sept. 3, 1918.
