RICHARD RUNDEL TRYON, Jr. 10.85b, son of Richard Rundel Tryon and Delicia Gertrude Williams Tryon, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, May 6, 1932. He graduated from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Economics, in 1954. He entered the United States Air Force as an aviation cadet on July 1, 1954. Motion sickness resulted in his separation from the program, and he was released honorably from active duty on July 5, 1955, while stationed at the Headquarters of the Air Reserve Service of the USAF. He married Anne Colwell of Champaign, Ill. on Feb. 26, 1955. They moved following military service to Columbus, Ohio, where his wife completed her education at Ohio State University. He worked for Kroger, a national grocery chain, for a few months and then spent two years in the field of Personnel Administration with Battelle Memorial Institute, a large research organization in Columbus, Ohio.

With their first-born daughter, Elizabeth Anne (Beth) they moved to Champaign, Ill., in 1958, where he became associated with the Colwell Publishing Co., with eight others who worked in the firm. It was started in 1927, in the business of providing the nation's physicians and dentists with bookkeeping systems, forms, and office stationery. The company's name evolved to The Colwell Company and was finally incorporated in 1979 as Colwell Systems, Inc., by which time 260 employees were engaged in a greatly expanded enterprise. His career path involved responsibilities in personnel and computer systems as well as marketing before becoming president in 1974.

In 1978 he accepted the volunteer post of Chairman of the Board of the National Academy of Arts in Champaign. He and Anne have been instrumental in restoring this prestigious secondary school for professional bound students of music and ballet, following a near financial collapse in 1980. They have contributed the land and building, equipped to handle over 500 day and 100 boarding students. The NAA is the only school of its kind in the USA.

The couple have three children:
Elizabeth Anne 11.77a,
Richard Rundel III 11.77b,
Amy Colwell 11.77c.

The NAA failed in 1987 after graduating eleven classes of talented young students.

Dick's career path changed when the company was sold in 1985 to the Deluxe Check Corporation. In 1989 he retired and began a new career in developing new businesses. One, called Agri-Tech Industries, Inc. was a pioneer in biodegradable plastic compounds, but lost the technical race to other companies with greater resources. Other ventures in real estate, web printing, and 3-D imaging also failed, but efforts with a smaller version of Colwell in Canada persisted until sold in 2003. A farm in Puerto Rico, and a computer related business known as TelePrint Systems, Inc.that became ergo-comp.com and sold on the web until manufacturing problems precluded any upgrading. It was involved with ergonomic keyboards that feature a new standard layout that eliminates 90% of the finger travel of old style boards, and also with learning systems to teach reading and math using CD computer technology.

Among his 1997 array of internet homepages are several now to be found by 2012 at tryontechnologies.com and gratisbooks.com. The Canadian enterprise at colwellsystems.com was closed in 2001.

By his efforts, the Wes Tryon's second edition was published and the unpublished notes and disconnected pieces were preserved for inclusion in the family database found at tryon-union.com on the web and maintained by Dan Brevik with help from Don Tryon and others but not known by 2012.

By the time of this latest update in July of 2012, Dick was persisting with the goals noted above and migrating between Frankfort, MI and Humacao, Puerto Rico with seasonal stops in Champaign, IL. With his wife they enjoy seven grandchildren, one great grand-son and many visits in all directions.

His major undertaking in 2012 is to expand his proven concept of growing food via use of vertical aquaponic technology, a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics in which pumped water powers a slow rotation to share sunlight. Efforts to expand are underway in both Michigan and Puerto Rico on his Sea Island,Inc. farm near Santa Isabel. Its webpage is seaislandverticalfarm.com
